In this month’s Tunbridge Wells Business Magazine, our CEO, Sophie Forrest-Lavery, explores why workplace wellbeing needs to go beyond benefits and awareness initiatives — and how a more practical, holistic approach can help create healthier, more resilient workplaces.

With sickness absence currently at historic highs across the UK, workplace wellbeing can no longer merely sit in a benefits brochure. Awareness initiatives have value, but they cannot compensate for excessive workloads, poorly equipped managers or policies that overlook real life. A stronger approach is both holistic and structural. It supports the whole person while examining the systems that shape their working day.

That means reviewing job design, workloads, flexibility, management capability and routes to professional help, not simply asking employees to become more resilient.

The need is especially clear in areas too often treated in isolation. Menopause support should be backed by a practical policy, informed managers, reasonable adjustments and confi dential conversations. Men’s mental health strategies must create safe, credible ways to ask for help, while younger employees and frontline managers, groups facing intense pressure, need regular check-ins and early support. Mental Health UK reports that one in five workers took stress-related mental-health leave in the past year, rising to 39% of 18-to-24-year-olds.

Financial wellbeing belongs in the same conversation.

Money worries can affect sleep, concentration and mental health. Employers may not be able to remove economic pressure, but they can provide fair, accessible benefits, financial education, signposting and compassionate flexibility. Data can help employers spot patterns in absence, overtime, workload and turnover before problems escalate. However, predictive analytics must be proportionate, transparent and used to improve, not to label or monitor individuals.

The most effective wellbeing strategy therefore connects policy, management practice, data and direct care. It equips managers to notice concerns, gives employees confidence to speak and turns insight into timely action.

Forrest Group can help you move from good intentions to practical, legally informed support tailored to your business, from robust policies and manager training to everyday HR guidance and effective people systems.
