Rethinking the Performance Review: Is Annual Still Enough? - August TWBM article

In this month’s Tunbridge Wells Business Magazine, our CEO, Sophie Forrest-Lavery, explores why it’s time to rethink the traditional performance review — and why a once-a-year conversation is no longer enough.

For decades, the annual performance appraisal has been a cornerstone of HR practice. It provided a structured, once-a-year opportunity to reflect on an employee’s achievements, set future objectives, and discuss long-term career development. But in today’s fast-paced, dynamic work environment, many businesses are discovering that the traditional yearly review is simply no longer enough.
While annual reviews remain a valuable tool for bigpicture planning, relying on them exclusively can leave employees feeling disconnected and managers struggling to course-correct in real-time. By the time an annual appraisal rolls around, challenges that could have been addressed months ago may have escalated, and key successes might be forgotten.
Transitioning to a model of more regular conversations allows managers to address obstacles early, celebrate progress as it happens, and keep employees motivated and focused on their goals.
So, what does a modern, practical approach look like? Consider implementing a blended strategy:
• An annual formal review to discuss overarching career trajectories and long-term development.
• A six-month progress review to evaluate mid-year performance against set objectives and pivot if necessary.
• Shorter quarterly or monthly check-ins to provide continuous feedback, tackle immediate hurdles, and maintain open lines of communication.
Ultimately, there is no one-size-fits-all solution. The right structure will depend entirely on the unique dynamics of your business, the capabilities of your managers, and the specific needs of your employees. What truly matters is that these conversations are consistent, constructive, and followed by clear, actionable steps.
